Can Stump Grinding Remove a Tree Stump's Roots?

Posted on: 15 July 2021

When you remove a tree, you only remove half of the problem. The other half of the problem lies underground. Since tree roots often spread much further outwards than a tree's canopy, you have much more than just a tree stump to remove. Stump grinding services can remove tree stumps. But can they remove a tree stump's root system too? In some cases, stump grinders can remove tree stumps.

Stump grinding can remove surface roots

Many trees have large surface roots that can spread out as far as fifty feet from the main tree. This sometimes leaves an extensive system of surface roots covering a lawn or garden. Since these roots are a safety hazard and can block construction and gardening projects, removing them is the best route to take. A stump grinder can grind out surface roots and can grind as deep as 6 to 8 inches.

Some trees, such as maples, willows, and hybrid poplars have shallow tree roots, so you can grind out the entire root system. However, not all tree services will go as far as finding and grinding out every surface tree stump. That's why you should take the time to find a reputable tree service in your area, with a good record.

Stump grinding cannot help with blocked pipes

If you are removing your tree and its stump because that tree has blocked your water pipes, then stump grinding is not the answer to your problem. A stump grinding service may be able to remove the bulk of the root system around the affected pipe, but it cannot remove the roots from the pipe. The stump grinder would likely damage the pipe. To remove tree roots from a pipe, you'll need a plumber.

The unseen roots underground can be treated with herbicide

One of the most serious issues with leaving hidden tree roots underground is that those tree roots may later continue to sprout and send suckers to the service. This will impede your ability to mow and maintain your lawn. Suckers are also a tripping hazard.

Fortunately, you can hire a tree service to apply herbicide to a hidden root system. Check with the tree service you plan to use to grind out your stump. They may also be able to apply herbicide to the hidden root system of the stump and kill off those roots.

A stump grinding service can deal with surface roots. But make sure you check with the tree service first to find out how they deal with surface and below-surface tree roots when grinding out a stump. Click here to learn more and connect with tree services.
